Review

“By framing ADHD as primarily a set of personality traits and a unique learning style, instead of as a disease or a disorder, Dale Archer moves psychiatry a step in the right direction. Written in an engaging style, the book is a refreshing change from the medicalizing of normal childhood difficulties.” —Marilyn Wedge, PhD, author of A Disease Called Childhood   “This book changes the conversation about ADHD by focusing on strengths rather than deficits. With a healthy mix of research findings, real-life stories and observations, Dale Archer convincingly shows that in the right context, ADHD symptoms can be leveraged and provide advantages. I feel particularly satisfied that he acknowledges the linkages between ADHD and entrepreneurship. The book provides me and other academics with ideas and inspiration to delve deeper into the topic.” —Johan Wiklund, Professor of Entrepreneurship at Syracuse University   "By trying to suppress and medicate ADHD out of existence, we risk suppressing the gifts that are part of the package.  Dale offers an array of useful and insightful alternatives for leveraging these strengths without the aid of a pill.  Overmedicating...could dim the light that could be the next great business leader, explorer or innovator." —From the Foreword by Allen Frances, MD, Chair of the DSM-IV Task Force, author of Saving Normal

My Desire after reading this book is to meet Dr. Archer Myself. The book is as practical as it is eye opening. It changes your perspective on ADHD.Ever ADHD coach and psychologist should own a copy along with everyone that has ADHD or has a loved one with ADHD.Every psychiatrist should read this before rushing to prescribe medication.Dr. Archer, if you read this review I only ask one thing of you ... do another publication addressing Dr. Thomas E Brown's work on the cluster of executive functioning. Jennie Friedman has done a wonderful job looking at the first three in her book A Different Hard Drive (A.D.H.D.). I would love if you provided a more in-depth look at it.Thank You

I haven't even finished this book and I've already gotten so much from it. Just the title says it all for me. Finally, a book that speaks to the advantages rather than the constant judgments associated with ADHD. My son is a creative, "out of the box" boy and this book was a breath of fresh air for me as his mother. He has been judged in school and this book validated my what I've known intuitively all along. Thank you Dale Archer. Please keep writing!

I wish I had read this in 4th grade. How much longer does this review have to be? It's ironic you're forcing me to write a long paragraph for a book about ADHD. I wanted to do just the stars. Yes! I'm done!

I am not sure if i would call it advantage. I would address every illness as an “illness” really. So if i try this with the most common mental condition depression would treating it as an advantage work ? Or how about uncontrolled anexiety or serious extreme bipolar and schizophrenia? Hmmm makes me think. Well it is easier to treat the illness and point if there would be any commonalities amongst the patients from different backgrounds and pont that this disease comes at a cost but perhaps it is not the end of the world given the right care. I would prefer that over neglegance of a condition like that or autism and dyslexia. Even though somehighly functioning individuals might have it or so.Regards

The book speaks for itself. It gets mixed reviews, but I think most people relate to items that make sense to them and discard the others. I found it refreshing to finally read something that discusses the positive aspects of ADD instead of treating it like a disorder.

SUPERB, AND INTRODUCES THE NON-MEDICAL APPROACH, WITH EQUAL RESPECT TO THE CONTINUUM (SPECTRUM OF THIS DISORDER). I believe that a sensitivity and knowledge and an understanding of the unique patient is necessary to make a responsible recommendation. Facts are critical as is a complete intergenerational history.

I loved this book. I have read it three times. A great motivator for the ADHD adult. Funny, engaging, worthwhile!

I have ADHD myself and always doubted my abilities. Society sees it as a disability. This book has helped me to see it in a different way and opened my eyes to the capabilities I have because I have ADHD!
