This is an excellent and welcome addition to the literature available on dance traditions outside of the Western theatrical dance canon. Ms. Beaman’s layered approach - starting with key points followed by concise, clearly labeled sections that delve into the historical and cultural context of the dances along with attention to their characteristics and terminology - guides the reader from the broadly conceptual to the specific details so that they are able to make the connections between what people dance and why they dance it. She does not shy away from the negative impacts of colonial imperialism on many of these dances, but she also makes connections between various forms’ traditional expressions and contemporary theatrical evolutions and individual innovators who are part of the vitality of these forms in the 21st century.To further illuminate the material, there are not only many wonderful and clearly identified color images and photos, but also first hand descriptions of selected dances from other scholars, anthropologists, and practitioners. Additionally, the materials are complemented with discussion questions and guides to additional resources. Ms. Beaman acknowledges that she wrote the book to serve as an introductory textbook and I think it very ably meets that goal. But I think it can and will appeal to anyone with an interest in dance as cultural expression.In the interest of full disclosure, I had the pleasure of working with Ms. Beaman as a grad student at NYU in the early 2000s, first as a student and then as her teaching assistant for the class for which this book was written. The fact that I can hear her voice and remember her intelligence and passion for the subject as I read definitely adds to my pleasure in doing so. But it also gives me the perspective to appreciate how much she has developed and expanded the material since I first encountered it through her. That speaks volumes to me about her standards and her integrity as as a teacher and a scholar, especially as a dance academic now myself, and enhances the enthusiasm with which I highly recommend this book.
I didn't see anything about European Christianity, such as "Los Penitentes de Nazarenos"; "Los Seisos"; etc. It's missing materials. I'm still using Gerald Jonas' "Dancing: The Pleasure, Power, and Art of Movement" since its more complete even though is not updated. I still have to supplement materials to my students. I'm searching for a more complete book for my students since the campus is requiring me to use an updated one. WDC: From Ritual to Spectacle is ok but not complete in my opinion.
World Dance Cultures is a must-read for dance historians and for people who are interested in learning about Non-Western dance. This book fills the gap that existed for educators who are teaching dance history and wish to inform their students as to the many dance forms that existed before ballet. The images are carefully selected and are a beautiful accompaniment to the rich text that overflows with information.
Patricia was my dance history professor in undergrad at NYU. This book is essentially a collating of all the information she taught independently without a textbook for so many years in the first semester of her course, in collaboration with the various artists with whom she would arrange to have her class study. The impulse to write the book is that such a book did not exist prior. In this sense it is an invaluable resource as a surveying of forms, which can then be delved into further through the copious sources she so thoroughly cites, especially as the practitioners of the forms she writes about additionally provide a great deal of input. It covers a broad range of cultures from all over the globe and is written with a tangible anti imperialist ethos that is all too timely in today's climate. USE IT! AND THEN GO FURTHER!

This book is both a helpful and practical educational text, and a fascinating and wonderfully described illustration of the beauty of dance across the globe. The striking images included throughout bring the descriptions to life, providing useful context to the numerous and diverse forms of dance that are discussed. I wholeheartedly recommend!
