Review

"Sara Bareilles is one of my favorite humans, and in my opinion, one of the finest singers and pop music artists of our time... This book, like her songs, is like having a conversation with the lady herself." (Ben Folds, from the book's foreword)"Her prose has a natural rhythm, and the stories behind each song are organically woven throughout. Fans will be more enamored, as, like Bareilles’s music, this biography resonates with authentic and hard-won truths.” (Publishers Weekly)“A chart-topping singer/songwriter exposes ‘the inner workings of my mind and my heart’ through this intimate essay collection anchored with music and humor… Bareilles conveys her life and career in a series of heartfelt, confessional ruminations written with the passion with which she hones her musical craft, forming an entertaining and candid scrapbook chockablock with memories, lyrics, stories, and photographs… A breezy, upbeat, and honest reflection of this multitalented artist.” (Kirkus Reviews)“Reading the book is like listening to your friend share a really good story over a long overdue coffee date—it just feels so honest.“ (StyleCaster.com)"Bareilles pours her heart and soul into these essays." (Associated Press)

I first saw Sara Bareilles perform at Dartmouth College during my senior spring in 2004. She was opening for Maroon 5 and I had never heard of her before, but I was immediately drawn in by her powerful voice and emotional lyrics. A few years later I was working in New York City and saw that she was playing a show with Jon McLaughlin to promote her brand-new album, Little Voice. I bought tickets and was lucky enough to meet her after the show, at which point I told her how I'd been following her progress since seeing her at Dartmouth.Sara and her music have continued to make a big impact on my life. In 2013 my fiance got me tickets to see her during her tour with OneRepublic. In 2014 I sang Sara's song "I Choose You" to my husband at our wedding. And yesterday I finished reading her book, which absolutely blew me away. I was expecting to like it, but I was not expecting it to grab me by the heart and squeeze until I was reeling. Sara's writing is so honest and pure, it felt like I was being given admission to her deepest inner secrets. I never knew that she struggled with her weight, body image, or depression and anxiety--just as I do. I had no idea that she left "The Sing Off" because the producers critiqued her wardrobe and wanted her to dress like some sparkly vapid pop star. And it came as quite a shock that she is just as insecure about her place in the world as the rest of us.I read the book in one day and was incredibly sad that it wasn't ten times longer. It made me want to be her friend. It made me want to write her a letter. It made me want to say, Sara, your writing, your voice, and your soul are beautiful. Thank you for the gift you have given the world.

If you liked Sara Bareilles before, you can't help but like her even more after reading this book. Plain and simple, she is a powerful writer. This applies both to her music and now this refreshing collection of essays on her life thus far. Just as she writes music that is somehow able to resonate deep with the heart, she brings that same courage and vulnerability to this book. The book is really a bit of a memoir filled with stories of her growing up to what she has learned up to this point in her life and career. It is a collection of eight essays all based around the story behind the song. Once Upon Another Time, Gravity, Love Song, Beautiful Girl, Red, Many the Miles, Brave, and She Used to Be Mine.If those songs weren't already moving enough, you will listen to them with a newfound appreciation and respect after finishing this book. Sara is clearly someone who has learned that facing her fears and moving forward anyways is the true definition of courage. Countless stories she tells are beautiful illustrations of what happens in this sweet place of surrender. That and a genuine gratitude for all she has been given and for the people who have taught her along the way. What I love most about the book is that it is ultimately a recollection of her finding her own voice. And as she has shared glimpses of that in her music, it has helped others do the same. And isn't that what life is ultimately about? That as we share our truth, we give permission for others to do the same. And that it's never a one way streak. Somehow we end up inspiring each other to dive even deeper into revealing ourselves for who we really are. No doubt she has done just that in the writing of this book. Her honesty about a whole range of topics from body image to a sound malfunction performing with Taylor Swift are all consistent with the kind of candor that her fans have come to know and love. I had to fight back tears in a restaurant as I finished her book today. The stories she shares from her own life as well as those of some of her fans are a reminder that we are all so uniquely different, yet also so much the same. Many thanks to you, Sara, for continuing to share your voice. In your greatest moments of self-doubt to your highest moments of exhilaration, may you receive back the Love that you continue to pour out to this world.

I've never written a review on Amazon but I can't NOT praise this book. I went into this expecting the same type of thing I've gotten with other memoirs of celebrities I enjoy... Some interesting tid bits about her life that are sprinkled with humor, but nothing too new that I couldn't just google to find out. I'm usually disappointed with modern memoirs... I was even disappointed with Bossy Pants and Yes, Please!, as much as I tried to love those books as much as I love the work of their authors. But I was so moved by Sounds Like Me that I could not put it down. Every chapter was not only interesting and told a story behind a song she wrote, but it was so damn vulnerable and revealing- I was sometimes shocked by the things she shared. It had me on the edge of my seat, wanting more of Sara's story and my own. The book is relatable to anyone who has been through... Anything. It is painfully honest and unbelievably encouraging. Sara is humble, self-deprecating, hilarious, and real.I never imagined I'd say this about a memoir of a 30-something celebrity, but I needed this story. And so do you!

Sara entertains with her multiple talents. It was clear from the first note that she owned the music magic, and the same can be said for her ability to write. 'Sounds Like Me' is a witty, insightful, honest, authentic, moving, touching and incredibly revealing memoir that speeds along and paints detailed picture after picture of her evolution. She's lovable and down to earth describing her body issues, heartbreaks, learning to trust her talent, navigating the industry trolls, motivations for writing songs, and overcoming the same challenges you probably (will face) have faced scratching your way out of adolescence (which ends sometime in your 30's) and carving out your future. Anyone whose loved and lost, tried and failed, or was frightened to take risks, will appreciate how Sara navigates life's tricky curves. It's like you're having a heart warming, best friend confessional conversation while driving down the Pacific Coast Highway of life, in a sports car, with the top down, hair blowing, with everything on the line. Enjoy!
