Into Hell's Fire is a masterfully written political thriller that's bound to keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. Douglas Cavanaugh paints a vivid picture of the bloody Balkan war, taking the reader on an educational action-packed adventure. When we first meet the protagonist, Lucas Martin, he is enjoying early retirement (or "permanent vacation") while living in Thailand in an apartment overlooking the Patong Bay. His dreams of nonstop traveling and sightseeing across Southeast Asia are suddenly put on hold when a man from Martin's past calls him up asking for his help.As it turns out, the United States government never read the briefing Martin had written before he entered his early retirement, now they wish they had. Their failure not to has left them unsure of how to proceed with their involvement, and position on, a new war beginning to unfold. As fate would have it, Martin is asked to get back in the game working undercover as a photographer within the boarders of ex-Yugoslavia. His mission is to report the facts about whatever is really happening on the ground, allowing the United States to better understand how they can be of help in the region. The book first sucks you in with a gripping beginning sequence, then carries on that momentum in supercharged fashion to the very end.I found this book to be an incredibly fun read and managed to finish it in a short weekend. Those unfamiliar with the territory, like myself, will turn the final page and walk away with a much better understanding of what the war was really about, and who was effected by it. The author displays wonderful pacing leading up to a climatic ending that begs for more. I hope for a squeal, as I'm sure you will too!

Captivating from the opening pages until the conclusion. It is one of those books that keeps you wanting to read more and hurry through to the end only to be sad when finished and wanting more.Cavanaugh brings you in to a world of fiction that is startlingly real—especially for those of us who have experienced the Balkans and have heard the many stories that have covered the pages of the Balkan history.A great read, an easy read and a heart-breaking story of triumph.

I really liked the way this Novel brought me into the balkan conflicts as if I was an insider. The author shows a good ability to craft vivid imagery of a war torn region and some of the atrocities and attitudes that were prevalent while basing a completely fictional storyline into that setting. I hope the author makes Lucas Martin a series of Novels like a James Bond or Jack Ryan. Lucas can be set into many scenarios. I will keep Doug Cavanaugh on my radar for a followup.

During my 5-week Croatian adventure, I had the unexpected good fortune of meeting the author, Douglas Cavanaugh, in his hometown of Kastav, Croatia, & we discussed this book so was looking forward to reading it. Thrills, chills, spills & espionage; this book did not disappoint! Plus, I had visited a lot of the places mentioned, which was an added “reminisce” bonus. Bravo, Sir Douglas!

When I started to read Into Hell’s Fire, I didn’t know what to expect actually, because I didn’t read too much books with this subject. But little by little, page by page, without knowing it, I was deep in the story. It was quite exiting to follow Lucas and story about him. I find most interesting part of the story about his childhood and how he became an agent in the first place. On the end of the book I had a feeling that something is missing. When I was a kid, I liked movie serials about Rocky, with Sylvester Stallone, especially 1-4., but then he made Rocky 5 (which I don’t remember anymore) , and then Rocky 6 . I didn’t know why, but then I saw an interview on TV with Sly, and they asked him; ok Sly , why Rocky 6 ? And he simply said, so many things happened to Rocky in his life, and with this movie I just want to give him a peace. After so many things happened to Luka , I hope (next part) that he will find out what happened to his father, and that he will find his peace.Like Rocky .

I am a woman from the Netherlands who, while on vacation in Croatia, stumbled upon Into Hell's Fire by Douglas Cavanaugh.I read this book with lots of pleasure. It was exciting. I also enjoyed that for a part the book read as if it were non-fiction. Like most people I know of the war in ex-Yugoslavia but no more than that. This book was a kind of history lesson and whenever there was mentioning of a specific city or region I would look it up on maps. This war was in that way different from other wars, that it was near; in Europe. In a country one goes to on vacation. It shouldn't, but that caused different emotions than those I feel when I hear or read about far away conflicts. Emotions I also felt while reading this book. Emotions I sometimes feel when in Croatia and I look at people and wonder: "what did you do/see during the war or what did they do to you". Or when I see houses that still have bullitholes in them.So this book did exactly what a book should do: bring up emotions!

I had a hard time putting this novel down. It brought out the same emotions I felt when reading the Cellist of Sarajevo - a sickening knowledge that greed and the desire for power will always be part of the human condition; and great empathy for your average citizen living in war-torn lands. I particularly appreciated the history lesson on the Balkans that Cavanaugh gives the reader while weaving his tale of espionage. An easy, entertaining and educational read - definitely worth checking out!
