The author has really done his homework, digging up fascinating facts about some of the world's truly colorful scientists and wanna-be scientists who, for better or worse, led the way to discoveries big and small of the natural world. The book is interesting from start to finish. I highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in the history of human discovery.

I read a lot of books about Darwin and science history. This book told me things I didn't know and made history come alive. Thanks!
Excellent compilation, based on this writer's non-fiction accounts of some of nature's most fascinating stories, a bookshelf of concise writings, all of it first-hand investigative reporting. Richard Conniff has, literally, taken all the trips anyone curious about the world we live in, but either hasn't had the time , energy or means to duplicate his travels, and observations of those who had the time, energy and/or means.
He was delighted with the subject matter as a gift read. My guess is this is good armchair "travel" adventure for my dear retiree.
