Alexandra Robbins has done her research with this well-written book about what life is really like for fraternity boys today. She follows fraternity members, two in particular detail, over the course of a year and interweaves their experiences into greater commentary of issues such as hazing and sexual harassment. Such topics hold greater interest for the reader than they otherwise might when correlated with the boys' stories.I loved Robbins' "Pledged" book from several years ago, but like this one even better because of its nuanced views. Robbins is quick to explain that there are bad fraternities and there are good fraternities and there are everything in-between; they can't all be painted with one brush. And I'd never before considered how so-called "lower-tier" houses may offer healthier environments due to their lack of competitive pressures.Something small but powerful that I also appreciated in Robbins' book is that she refers to these young fraternity members as "boys" instead of men. She explains how research shows how the brains of young males are still developing in their late teenage years, making them more vulnerable to social pressures of groups like fraternities. This can be a life-changing good thing or bad thing, depending on the fraternity. What definitely is a good thing is this book. I have no hesitations in recommending it.

Fraternity: An Inside Look at a Year of College Boys Becoming Men, by Alexandra Robbins, is an eye-opening, insightful investigation into the secrets and life in a fraternity. The author takes us on the journey of two young men (Jake and Oliver) in the "Greek" life. The readers are exposed to the positive and negative life-changing experiences they endured. This book is less about the "what" than the "why" of fraternities. Parents of high schoolers need to understand more about the lifestyle so that they can help their children decide where to apply to college and whether to go "Greek". Financial, physical, emotional, academic and safety aspects of fraternity memberships need to be considered so that the parents and students choose wisely.Extremely informative advice and tips are offered making this book a very helpful tool that is long overdo and well worth the read.Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Group Dutton for an arc of this book in exchange for my honest review.

What a timely and powerful book. In the #MeToo era, so many men (and parents of boys) are grappling with masculinity and what it means to be an ethical man. Fraternity reads like a novel, taking you inside two different fraternities through the perspective of young men trying to find brotherhood, act morally and also have a little fun. Alexandra Robbins doesn’t sugarcoat the racism, misogyny and alcohol-fueled life of many fraternities, but neither does she demonize the men who seek out fraternities (or the women who join sororities.) Robbins presents a compelling explanation of the continued grip Greek life has on college social networks, despite the many recent sex and alcohol scandals, and outlines a framework for improving the situation for everyone. Her questions for college students and parents give a useful entry point and make this gripping account of one college year a must-read for anyone concerned about the ability of the next generation to form healthy relationships and make responsible choices. I devoured this book in just a few days. Highly recommend.

I am a huge fan of Alexandra Robbins' books, with "Pledged" being my absolute favorite. So when I heard she was writing a book about fraternities, I was so excited. One of my favorite things about Robbins' books is the way she goes back and forth between the research she has uncovered about her chosen topic and her subjects. With "Fraternity" it's two men, one who has just started college and is looking into joining the Greek system and one who is Chapter President and the issues and obstacles that come with the position. Robbins takes us behind the scenes of fraternity life while following the two men over the course of a year. As always, her writing and storytelling is wonderful and research insightful. Along with the two men she follows, the book is full of quotes and stories from other men in fraternities from all over. I could not put this book down.

Once again, Alexandra Robbins had me hooked by the first page of the first chapter! I've enjoyed all of her books as she truly helps the reader get to know the characters. She expertly shares their experiences with the readers and strategically provides necessary history as context. She is not afraid to tackle controversial topics in hopes to advance conversation. Fraternity is a must-read, whether you were part of the Greek system or not. I was a Non-Greek but work in higher education. She truly captured so many nuances and challenges of the Greek community within higher education. Additionally, she shares a variety of perspectives with readers, allowing us to make our on judgments. Thank you for this book! I highly recommend it and if you have not read her others, you should!

I enjoyed reading this book and learning about the fraternity system through the eyes of the two young men Robbins follows, one who belongs to what seems to be a stereotypical fraternity and the other who creates a much more positive experience as the president of his fraternity. Other fraternity members were also interviewed to fill out more details from different perspectives. All aspects of fraternity life are covered from good to bad, through not only the anecdotal stories but also extensive research on the topics. No issue is left unaddressed from alcohol to the treatment of women. This would be a helpful book for parents of sons who want to join fraternities as well as for people who work at universities. Alexandra Robbins writes amazing books that allow her readers a unique window into the lives of young people and Fraternity is equally as enlightening.

Great realistic view of Fraternity life rather than the media propaganda. A must read for a balanced view of the Fraternity experience.
